He's definitely not as bad as Benitez.

And you guys don't seem to realize how closers operate. They have to have a certain mindset coming in. That's why it's hard for them to come into a tied game (as Familia did the other night). It's also why they go crazy and start sucking (see Eric Gagne being unhittable for a year, then falling off the face of the earth). A dependable closer is hard to find. And even Mariano Rivera blew games (does nobody remember the Arizona World Series?). Familia is fine. He had good nights and bad nights over the summer (but saved 35 straight at one point). He just got tired late (like last year). We can only hope that he saves 51 next year.
Mariano didn't blow that save, that was on Torre for calling for the infield to be in.

Lol. And how about all the runners he let on base before that hit? Bases loaded, 1 out, you bring the infield in for 4-2-3 or 6-2-3 double plays. Can't risk the World Series on not completing a double play and The first priority is to get the lead runner at home.

Do you have an excuse for the blown saves in the Marlins series?

Addison Reed (who also struggled with putting on baserunners towards the end of the year because he was tired) came into 46 games in save situations and had 40 holds, and 4 blown saves. Familia came into 56 save opportunities, with 51 saves and 5 blown saves. Seems to me that Reed is no better than Familia, and for closers, I like Familia's sinker better than Reed's changeup/slider combo.

So you understand how closers operate, but anyone who disagrees with you just doesn't get it. Is that it?

Reed saved 40 a few years back....and I don't think his team back then was as good as the Mets this year.  Familia would be some good trade bait....another high average hitter would be a great addition.

Nope. Just pointing out some stuff that you guys, in your expert analysis, seemed not to consider.

My main point was that a great closer who is consistently good from year to year is rare, and Familia is that guy. I'd only trade him for a Mike Trout level player.

There is a Grand Canyon of disparity between those two. That would be like having Trump to trade and hoping to get FDR in return.

Ouch, that's harsh!  With 51 saves Familia isn't THAT useless!  But point taken, he is a loser.....er, was a loser Wed night.

I have no idea is Familia is a decent closer, but I blew my coffee out my nose.

Agree with Cerrone's comment underneath - focus on suring up the rest of the bullpen. They have a closer, and there's no use rolling the dice (and paying $50 million) on this guy who had less saves and more blown saves than Familia.

The focus should still be on the offense.

Yeah. If they don't get Cespedes back (or some big bats to replace him), it won't matter what they do with Familia.

Agreed about the offense...I said that in my initial post, but we still need to get rid of the chokers.

Cespedes will be bard to replace if they don't resign him and even he wasn't enough this season...next season we need even more O.

Re: Mets

Well, remember, we lost Walker, Wright, and Duda to injury, too (and even when they were playing, they weren't 100%). That's 60-70 Home Runs and 250 RBIs right there (between them).

Also, one team is going to lose tonight, and one team will win. There might even be a blown save. Will it be because the guy "choked"? Or is it because, in a game like baseball, there are lots of variables that go in to whether a guy is going to play well or not?  For instance, a manager using a closer so much that it's not clear if he'll be ready to throw another 30 pitches.

10 and 1. 8 straight wins. Two divisional sweeps in a row.

New manager is delivering. Offense looks strong.

Let's Go Mets!!!

LFGM

Kicking ass right now. Last two games have been comeback masterpieces.

Only 0.5 games out of the top wildcard spot and deGrom is on the mound tomorrow!
