This series, sure. But next year, yeah. I'd like Herrera at 2nd and Conforto starting in left, Legares in center. It's be nice to have a big bat at SS or Centerfield, but that won't happen unless they can get the Angels to agree to a Harvey and Wheeler for Mike Trout Trade |

That, and atrocious defense at the worst possible time. KC did everything the Mets couldn't -- grinding out at-bats, fouling off tough pitches, making enough solid contact to get a hit, aggressive but smart base-running, knowing what to do with the ball when (if?) you catch it. It's like KC was a team full of Jeters.

I guess it's that time again, thanks for the headsup. Always nice to know when to pay attention to the Mets.
Of course I'll need the full update.

Too many injuries this year, Harvey, Wright, Duda, Legares, and now Walker is out for the year. Wheeler never got back in the rotation either.
They scrapped together a team with a huge pickup of James Lomey and a garbage pickup of Jay Bruce. They have a chance, but they definitely don't have the team they had last year. |
Kudos to Terry Collins for keeping the Mets close enough to be relevant in the National League Wild Card race. He's done so with a cast of characters seemingly in an endless revolving door. Fewer than half of the guys in the opening day starting line-up are currently not on the disabled list or in the minors. Like last season, Collins has the team peaking at the right time. My fear is that Syndegard, DeGrom and Big Sexy, who have been the work horses of the pitching rotation will poop out before anything of a deep run into the play-offs becomes a reality.

Bringing Jay Bruce in was a huge mistake. He hit HR's in Cinci in a very small ball park that are just routine fly balls in Citi Field.

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Awesome pitching matchup; both of them look great so far. Mets keep popping up..one of their swings should (hopefully) connect solidly soon. (Fingers crossed).

How many times has Syndergaard been that brilliant.....and been beaten by somebody more brilliant? Ever?
That was brutal for the Mets. Yes, without Familia the Mets aren't even in that wildcard game, but what a terrible time to give up only his second home run of the season in yet another postseason blown save for the man that led the league in saves. Just brutal. Hats off to SF.
We REALLY need a proper roll eyes emoji!!

No doubt very tough loss after a strong season , good run Mets !!!

Was fun to watch the Mets in the run up to the postseason and 8 innings last night. Tough way to lose, but Baumgartner pitched great. Reminded me of the Jack Morris start for the Twins back in the 90s
|
I'm sorry to say but I'm starting to think they should trade Familia. He just can't seem to close the big games and blew a few big ones in the run-up to the wildcard game this year. He could probably bring a good amount on the market and the Mets seem to have a lot of young arms that can fill the gap. Put Addison Reed in the closer spot.
|
Familia isn't the problem though, 21 pitches through 3 innings is. They need 2001 David Wright, Jose Reyes, Mike Piazza + today's pitching staff.

51 saves is a phenomenal year. I think both Familia and Reed got tired at the end of the season (but Collins kept needing to use them because they were in close games). Next year, if they get some more offense, maybe Collins can give them a little more rest before the playoffs.
|
Agreed. But you have to rise to the occasion and win the big games to be a phenomenal player. Familia blew up during last year's world series and did it again at the end of this season.

Don't be sorry, you're right about Familia. Even though he had 50+ save this season he hardly ever had a clean 9th inning. The bigger the game is the worse he seems to handle the pressure. Reed might be able to handle it.

Familia reminds me too much of a previous Mets fireballing closer, Benitiz. Both made the ninth inning a test of my cardiac function when they give up a hit or two or three, then depend on a gem of a play by the defense before whiffing the last batter. Familia, despite his high save total, is far from an A-list closer. And he has proven two years in a row that he wilts in post-season pressure. I agree...cut him loose. Let Addison Reed be closer.

He's definitely not as bad as Benitez.
And you guys don't seem to realize how closers operate. They have to have a certain mindset coming in. That's why it's hard for them to come into a tied game (as Familia did the other night). It's also why they go crazy and start sucking (see Eric Gagne being unhittable for a year, then falling off the face of the earth). A dependable closer is hard to find. And even Mariano Rivera blew games (does nobody remember the Arizona World Series?). Familia is fine. He had good nights and bad nights over the summer (but saved 35 straight at one point). He just got tired late (like last year). We can only hope that he saves 51 next year. |
Reed saved 40 a few years back....and I don't think his team back then was as good as the Mets this year. Familia would be some good trade bait....another high average hitter would be a great addition.
