Ok gentleman. The season has started. I'll try to keep this updated. I'm going to use nws measurements and forecasts to compare the two over the season.
Snow ridge missed out on most of the snow in this one, but they still managed to get 35 inches. Truly an EPIC event! So you have a few feet of pow to play in on Saturday(opening day at snow ridge...they should have opened today!). How much powder at jay peak/stowe? zero. They're using snow guns which will ice up the conditions! Snow ridge is all natural this weekend with feet of powder! Jay peak claims 355 inch average. Snow ridge....mid 200s. So jay peak should get way snow than snow ridge. About a 1/3 more snow. Tremendous difference. Let's pay close attention to the nws reports/forecasts and see how it goes.

You do know that you need some serious steepness to be able to ski a lot of snow, right?
funny like a clown

We've been through this. Take that topic to east coast pow thead. This thread is simply comparing the snowfall for a season. That's the point. We know what tug hill area averages(mid 200's at snow ridge). Jay peak claims 355. Let's see how this year goes and how they match up. I'm simply going to put up amounts from nws.

That would be dangerous, someone might get hurt.
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

So you're saying that Jay Peak has gotten 0 natural snow so far this season?
Regarding this thread and your persistence, I have to agree with Highway Star's favorite post over at AlpineZone. |
It seems that JPR has some snow. They opened today and posted this picture on their website. Granted, a good skier can make a little snow look like a lot for a photo, but still:

Jay and stowe both claim to have gotten 6 to 10 inches overnight

Apparently, they got 8 inches and posted a ridiculous pic of someone in deep powder maybe chest deep. Someone actually ski there today vouch for the type of conditions posted in that picture? 13 inches in past 48 hours.
Jay peak snow report It's been snowing hard here since our first report; the count is now reading over half a foot of natural snow on the mountain with drifts measuring in feet rather than inches. . I'd love to actually see independent verification of this. As in someone showing a picture of the parking lot/walking toward the base in deep snow like that. lol Burling nws forecast for that period ".NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 PM THIS EVENING/... AS OF 651 AM EST FRIDAY...UPSLOPE SNOW SHOWERS IN NORTHWEST FLOW CONTINUE THIS MORNING...BUT INFLUX OF DRIER CANADIAN AIR WILL PUT AN END TO SNOW SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON. OTHERWISE GENERALLY DIMINISHING CLOUDS WILL LEAD TO MOSTLY CLEAR TO PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES IN THE AFTERNOON, WITH THE NORTHEAST KINGDOM BEING THE LAST TO CLEAR OUT."

Ok a few spotter reports coming in with significant snowfall.
7 and 4 inch reports from spotters. http://www.weather.gov/btv/spotterReports Fair enough. A nice upslope event for jay peak. That pic is a complete joke of course. But let's say 8 inches. So far the score is 8 inches to 35 inches.

I also believe Jay Peak picked up a few inches here or there before this last event
|
Then why do they only have 2 trails open(out of 78)? LOL! Especially considering that picture they posted. I'm sorry, but no one esle finds their shot of the day completely and totally misleading? That amount of snow that it looks like in the picture would be enough to open the entire mountain. That's feet and feet of powder.

Stowe got 6-10 last night and the season total stands at 32". There measurement but these are off of fb (various skiers)
FIS at Stowe: scott b at stowe out for a lap with patrol: dalton h at smuggs with a snowboarder buddy: SBR already had Jay covered.... Here's some video evidence to prove that Northern Vermont did not suck on 11/21: http://youtu.be/WwzWkuXnLDQ Stowe's seasonal snowfall stands at 32" right now, Jay is at 14 but i think they just started measuring it whereas Stowe started awhile ago. I'm sure that Snow Ridge will continue to get dumped on until the lake freezes, and I am also sure that it will turn brown at some point when higher mountains do not. Not hating on it, I still just don't get these threads. |
The lifts weren't even running. lol What's with the morons with the off leash dog?(that they almost ran into)
Anyway, it looked like a blast! No way that's waist deep pow obviously. 6-12 sounds fair with drifts being a little more. I'd like to see some more videos when the resort is actually opened of people scoring pow on the trails like that. That looks like 32 inches to you? More like a foot.(average depth...drifts were deeper) At least that's what it looked like to me.

Oh and to answer your question Glade, my home mountain is thunder ridge. Yeah yeah...hate on it all you want. LOL. Yes I know jay peak is 10 thousand times better(or any mountain in VT). No argument there

I dunno, 6-12 sounds totally fair. I wouldn't call it waist deep, that's crazy. But they get faceshots because the snow is light. At 50 seconds, that trail is pretty steep and he isn't bottoming out or anything, there were already consolidated snows underneath the new stuff. I guess I just wish I was skiing this weekend, it looks really good up north everywhere from SR, to Gore, to WF, to Northern VT, to Maine, but wishes aren't going to get my stuff done here.

It looked awesome. Wish I lived close up there in winter time. Staring at brown grass here with nowhere to ski yet. I'm getting antsy.
