Not sure this new manager for Centerplate at WF gets the culture of the place. They put this huge wooden check in stand at the top of the stairs right where the bar crowd stands. Like poeple are going to want to get seated in the Cloudspin? Where does he think he is Vail? If you want a sit down quiet apres experience the J Lohr is already open downstairs. No bands up there this season for some unknown reason as well.
The food in the cafeteria seems ok but prices are higher than in past seasons. Beer prices are crazy high and there is no employee disc anymore. When Poormans opens that will be the place to go. Word is this guy is also complaining about the cooking and groups that put on big spreads of food and drink they carry up there at mid. Trying to shut Grillman down. Just a guess but he probably won't like the deck scene in the spring either.

I haven't noticed anything as I'm a first year passholder.

Snolocoach!
Just part of the slow, methodical machine of time making everything less fun and more of a pain in the ass as time goes by. Things used to be good (flying, work, skiing, etc.) and, for whatever reason, they just get worse and worse as they get more corporate, more six-sigma'd, and more "efficient". I saw it at Mount Snow over the week, as Peruvians and Argentinians are doing all the jobs, and I see it at ORDA as contractors squeeze the fun out of skiing in hopes that they can squeeze a little more profit out of people. This is what you want, Coach. Leave it all to the free market! I'm sure your work life and your recreational life will be fine. You want an authentic experience, you have to go to a place like Plattekill, where skiing is skiing and the owner is interested in the skiing experience. |

Would be a real shame to see this progress down this path, as Whiteface has always been a great place in my opinion for being a no frills skiing focused mtn. Screw that fancy shit, along with the $7 beers
Skiing is not a sport, it is a way of life.

How much are the beerz?
I don't know how much they are at Gore because the bartender won't take my order. It's true I've never successfully ordered a beer in the Tannery. I usually give up after 4 ignores. At Plattekill I have no idea how much they are as my primary goal is to leave Dennis a big tip.

Exactly
It's a culture thing that the new guy clearly doesn't get. Maybe they need to split the bar space in half with one side a bar and the other a resturant. There certainly is enough space to do that. I haven't met this new guy but from looking at things seems he may be a corp ladder climber looking to show how he can spiff things up and increase spend per guest so he can move onto a better Centerplate venue. I'd assume the ladder is Thruway rest area to ski area to Sports venues like Giants Staduim.

Messing with the well established culture of a ski area usually doesn't play out well.
Look what happened when Powdr bought Killington. Most of the locals hated them, until they brought back the extended season and BMMC in 12-13.

It's worked out pretty good for Jackson. Not the locals or the culture but for the big $ Aspen types it's great!
The Vill ain't what it used to be. :( |
Here ya go, Coach. The State of New York is included in the list of corporate owners of ski areas.

This ^^^^ This is bad news! One of things I always loved most about WF is how chill it is and the fact the beers weren't 7 bucks. Damn. |

Saw a lot of those big money types when I was there. They clog up the liftlines, but, oddly, I never see them on the hill. They must prefer different terrain than I do. |
I don't think its that bad. They do have a desk at the top of the stairs to seat you. First time I encountered it I was in a little daze and just walked around it. Noticed the girl looking at me and realized what I did. She was cool about it. Beers have always been expensive. Its the price of admission. If they are not going to have bands I will not miss them. I cant hear or talk when they are playing and the only people who seem to enjoy them are the people that BYOB anyways. The food is good and to company is the best. Sat I looked around and all I saw were people I like to talk with. Sure I spent 35 bucks for 5 beers with tip but what are you going to do. One thing I do like about the holidays is when there is a snow day the mountain does not get tracked out. Most of the locals by non holiday passed and you don't see many of them poaching cloud on a powder day. I got fresh tracks most of Saturday and it was knee deep all day.

I'm looking forward to checking out Pourman's too. When the employee discount disappeared last year there was a lot of bitching and complaining and I was thinking there might be a boycott for at least awhile, but it never happened.

BINGO....that's the big draw. The convenience for meeting up with your crew. Sat. was awesome. I got a run down Wilderness I'll remember all year. I never crossed another track and never bottomed out the whole way down.

That's true, TJ, price of admission for sure.
We get spoiled at home with our $4 pounders |
I hope they bring back the bucking bronco and that jousting game. I'd love to square off against CampComrade for some serious jousting. And I do not follow the rules CC, I'll be swinging for the head!!
