new yorks best powder hill

kenneywallace
This has nothing to do with size, or say the hole grrek peak vs song lab, or gore vs so thing like hunter

Which new york ski area do you think gets the best powder conditions for skiing (not jist any snow slop, the closest thing to west powder you can get)

My best day was at lab after a unexpected lake snow event, woke up to them getting 12", droped everything and got one of the only true dry powder days ive skiied, the other was o. 4" at greek, but I cant imagine that a random storm is the best ny can do? Theirs gotta be a more consistant hill

Well, Snow Ridge averages 230" a year and I don't see any other mountain in NY with that high of a total.

Pretty sure man made isn't considered powder.

Ugh. Come on. You KNOW that wasn't what he was talking about.

I hope you're aware that you don't have to sing the praises of snowmaking and grooming in EVERY thread. It's starting to get a little old.

Dude, stop typing with your nose.

Your best powder days are 12" and 4"? (Actually you wrote "o .4"" but I'm assuming that was the nose talkin'.)

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

Look, with a few exceptions (yourself included) this is a place where people who really don't know much about skiing can go on and on (and on and on) about skiing.  There's nothing wrong with that but I just wish it wasn't called "The New York Ski Blog" and "NY Ski Forums".  Sort of embarrassing.

Come on be honest noah. Are you really embarrassed - I find it hard to believe that what somebody writes in a forum would embarrass you

Snow ridge and they get more pow days than anywhere on the east coast.(of course not being open monday/tuesday might make them get less just because you can't hit it those days!) Forget the listings by the ski areas. Nowhere in new england gets the number of pow days nor the deepness you'll find there. The U.P. of michigan gets a ton of pow days as well. Never skied there though.

Many even exaggerate about their true vertical.
Use this tool to find true vertical for yourself. Go to sattelite view. Click on top of the hill, then the bottom.

Why? Because the resort told you so?
Mt. Mansfield summit average(nearly 4000 feet)

I'd say 233 inches is a bit of an undercall for the summit, but that's just my opinion.)

Here's an official NWS climate reporting site from near the base of jay peak. It's nowhere near what they're reporting at the ski area.

I'm not taking anything personally.  You just don't know what the fuck you're talking about.  I've always been a bit skeptical of the "Jay Stick" myself but they certainly do better than 230".

When you talk to the lady from Snow Ridge about snow reporting it's funny... she'll say something like "I estimate snow on the low side because I don't want people to be disappointed."  LOL

FWIW the one time I skied Jay Peak and it snowed they called it five inches and I thought it was more like eight.

Anybody can set up a website claiming any amount of snow. The links I listed above are official nws stations. Mansfield is missing a little data so that's why I said the average is a bit undercalled. But the point remains the same. The jay peak station at nearly 2000 feet located pretty close to the base area gives you a better idea. That station reporting WAY WAY less than the resort reporting.Check each year and compare. That station is manned up by someone reporting to the government.

Snow ridge is a tiny ski hill with around 500 feet vertical worth barely a million. Mt Snow spent 10 million + one lift! These areas in VT are BIG business. They could probably exaggerate and get away with it! You can measure in a drift! No one is going to ask for their money back because of "average seasonal snowfall total". They'll just say that's our average!

So jay peak at 355 inches vs Alta at 514......
REALLY? REALLY?
Are you f'ing kidding me? That's pretty close. Those two hills are in different planetary orbit when it comes to number of pow days. No way in hell it's that close. That would mean you would get 70% of the pow days at jay peak than at alta! Yeah right!
