Reminds me of one of Warren Miller's great one liners about western ski conditions - "4 feet of snow over 5 feet of rocks" Snow making, snow density and humidity make a big difference.

Ask Mr. crocker for specific links to where he gets his data from on his site for his snowfall averages he lists. Most of the trails at stowe are groomed anyway. Compare that to the amount of terrain at alta...give me a break. I put as much weight in stowe's measurements as I do jay peaks. Do you think northern vermont gets more than double the snowfall of the adirondacks on average?.....lol So you think you'd be better off on the trails at jay vs alta this year for powder? LMAO Here's another link showing NWS data from jay peak at the base with an average snowfall of 222 inches. Most of the snow gets blown off the summit at jay peak so you're really skiing base to mid mountain. Even at the summit of mansfield they can't crack 225 inches, forget over 300. PAY ATTENTION TO ELEVATION. The aspen measurement was taken at 8000 feet. It goes all the way to 11,000 feet at the summit. Wolf creek measurement was taken at the base. That's an unbelievable amount of snow. Nothing on the east could compare. 435 inch average. To say there's less than 90 inch difference between jay peak and wolf creek is patently absurd. TABLE 1. Annual snowfall at selected NWS cooperative stations near ski resorts. Sources include the Western Region Climate Center, NOAA/National Climatic Data Center, and the National Weather Service Forecast Office Burlington, VT. From secrets of the greatest snow on earth report: Link here http://www.inscc.utah.edu/~u0028395/gsnow.pdf What exactly will it take for you guys to see the OBVIOUS? Man made snow. duh.... There's a reason places like grand targhee don't need any snow guns. And they can get above freezing as well.
14-15 Season:

You do realize we are having an awesome year? Forget about annual averages, time to get off your couch and ski. The adks have been kind of shafted compared to nvt so far.
|
I know it's hard to believe but here is the NOAA data - a rather respectable source don't ya think.
And another "Deep Pow day at Alta Poor Alta - no snow and sitting at 66" base. In a normal year I would go out west, this is no normal year. Reports coming back from those who were there last week are not good. Not bad, but not good. We should send our resident ignorant dip shit there for a first hand report - oh but no, there are no safety bars on some of the lifts and he might shit his britches.

Stowe gets more snow than the ADK because of lake effect from Champlain.

Number 1. I absolutely trust that noaa site you just listed. It's average snowfall as reported at that site near the summit of mansfield is in the low to mid 200s and that's at the summit **************************************************************************** Add up all the snow reported this year at that noaa site you just posted a pic of. Tell me if it matches what stowe reported. It's very simple. DO THAT OR PLEASE KEEP QUIET. ******************************************************************************************* Number 2. The snow stake which is above lift serviced terrain at stow at nearly 4000 feet. You can't extrapolate total snowfall based on snow depth at high elevation due to drifting that takes place. Snowfall depth above 3000 feet in the greens varies hugely in different spots at the same elevation due to drifting from tremendous winds even in the woods and the woods at near 4000 feet are badly wind effected/stunted growth. It's near tundra at that elevation. I'll give you an example. At certain spots at the summit of mt washington the snow depth might be a few inches. Go to tuckermans and it's 10 feet deep. That doesn't mean tucks gets more snow than the summit. It drifted in. It's a "bowl". There are no bowls at stowe at lift serviced terrain, but different spots in the woods have greater snow depth than others. So you can't make a direction correlation Wind is a major problem once you get above 3000 feet in the greens. Look at all the wind closures even yesterday What do you think that does to powder? When it dumps 2 feet, isobars are packed tight and winds are even worse. lmao....It's not just more....it's DOUBLE. Go ask nws burlington(weather scientists) if the mild lake enhancement(what it really is) would cause more than double the amount of snow on average in northern vermont vs adks. You can see how little lake effect there is by looking at burlington vs oswego, ny. You can't compare a little lake enhancement off of champlain to the mesoscale banding lake effect off of ontario(which also can mildly hit the adk's). Keep trying though. orographic lift(upslope) occurs in the adirondacks, northern vermont, or any mountain range. No one is debating that jasonwx, but nice try again....lol

Correct, I never thought I'd say this, but bring back Noah John!! His arguments were pretty funny when I look back on them, and when he flamed me, I usually said something I should not have posted anyway.

You have issues, son. Go have a few beers with Scotty Jack and both of you drive real fast down an icy mountain rode afterwards, OK?

They are calling yesterday and today the 2 worst days of the season at Alta:
http://www.thedailypow.com/alta-daily/worst-day-season/ |
No, the Monday before last had to be worst, because a little storm rolled in spewing ice pellets in everybody's face while they had to ski the same chunky conditions, with some glare ice thrown in. Then the fog rolled in.
