Does anyone know why the High Peaks chair is closed?

Fast and Firm today. Got up around ten, skied under the SB Quad for a run, Rumor, and then took Pipeline down to Burnt Ridge. We skied Barkeater down to the powerlines and took those down to lower pipeline. I was looking at them last time I was home and they looked like a good run. Tons of tracks on it when we got there. I have a feeling they aren't going to let people keep skiing that, though. If they do, they should DEFINITELY mark the guywires. Fugette almost took her head off on one.
Met Brant Lake Ed over on the BR Quad, had a nice chat and parted ways. Did a little more bushwhacking, went really fast down Echo and called it day pretty early. |
It's shame that High Peaks chair was closed this weekend. I hope for next weekend they re-allocate employees from Adk. Express and/or Hudson chair to High Peaks.

They needed someone to run the Hudson Chair (which they said was ABSOLUTELY closed for the season 3 weeks ago), so they pulled the person from the High Peaks Chair.

I'm curious ... which pod(s) had the best tree skiing in the last few days?

The liftie on the Hudson Chair told me on Sunday that management told him that it was his last day. Pink slip as of 3/27.

I have to say it was a bit of a disappointment the High Peaks chair wasn't running this weekend. But overall, no complaints about the skiing this weekend, with great conditions from the summit to the base of the ski bowl, in the trees and on the trails. I've got some pics and TR from Sunday here.

I was high speed cruzin on Saturday but yesterday afternoon (I didn't get their till lunchtime) I went right to twister glade and it skied great. Hard but enough soft to turn on...Then to Barkeater...OMG! did that a few times. The base is solid but everything is covered and the sides and against the grain were still soft. Tahawus also very nice very little bare. Then I went up top and skied OPG not very good, cruddy and then below very set up and I actually bailed halfway down...however prior to that, on the way to the straightbrook chair I hit the motherlode...all the snow getting blown off Pine Knot ended up in Pine Brook Glade...I was skiing powder at 3:25 on a bluebird Sunday! It was just another nice(winter but warmer than Saturday) windy day in Paradise.

I skied it a day or two after a decent snowfall when it first opened, but the headwall was closed. You had to ski over into the trees for a bit and then traverse back over. No doubt it needs a BUNCH of snow to open top to bottom, but it was fun nonetheless.

Where The Heck is "Gore Today" thread? Could not find it...
I was 3rd skier on Hawkeye this morning, got treated to 3" of powdery snow. Once crowd got in (yes there were plenty of skiers, many wearing daily tickets) I moved on to Birnt Ridge. Barkeater - awesome, Sagamore glade - serene. Even got in Tahawus glade (north quad is no more), 5-6 minutes spent traversing Pipeline/Eagle's Nest, not bad at all. Got back to Straightbrook quad after 2pm, made a fool of myself skiing bumbs under that chairlift. By that time Rumor softened up nicely, Lies was even better. I wish there were more bumped trails during spring skiing. I'm not good enough for moguls under Straightbrook chair, only other option being mogul run on Arena. Those on Arena are my size - low pitch and more or less regular, but it takes time to get there. |
Dennis, blame it on me. I should have posted earlier and bumped this thread up.
I probably saw you while we were riding the Straightbrook chair. We didn't ski that line, but skied most of the trails and woods at the summit. Classic spring conditions, whiteout and all, with beautiful snow all over. Just a great spring day, the kind it seems we've waited all winter for. Pics and a TR are here. |

Check out Jeff's pics from yesterday - they are great. Better yet get up to Gore now, and look at the TR tonight. Gondi just went green and temp is 33 at the base. Looks perfect.
FYI Denis - we decided to create the Conditions Forum to hold all the "Today" threads.

It was great again today. I didn't have the family with me today, so I hooked up with my tele gang (+ a few token alpiners) and skied myself silly. Was too tired to do a TR this evening (I'll put one up tomorrow), but here's a pic from Uncas early in the day. It's just amazing that there's so much snow on the mountain at this point in the season. Anything that faced into the sun, trail or woods, corned up beautifully. Anything facing away from the sun (Darkside) still held dry snow all day. It probably didn't go above 50, but it felt like a day at the beach.

few comment from Sunday:
- i skied Tahawus glade in the morning, 2 times. No sign of melting yet, lets hope for it to be one of of surviving into next weekend. It was still below freezing, skated Pipeline in 2 minutes 22 seconds - from it's start to the bridge. - what a difference Sun makes: Halabaloo as well as Lower Darby were bullet-proof in places. - there were a lot of people today (for April), lot D was full, 5-7 minutes gondola line. - Twister glade is done - plenty of snow at the upper part, not so mush at the lower. - probably less then a dozen bare spots throughout the mountain |

Yesterday was a fantastic day on the hill. Not a cloud in the sky! Skied all over the hill, but settled on lapping the Straighbrook. Rumor, Lies and the lower portion of Double Barrel were in excellent shape. As noted, coverage remains great for this time of year, even in the trees.

Nice comparison, Harv . . .
How much snow was there? Freaking Gunbarrel was open!!! On April 3rd!!! We did some mountain touring this past weekend (read:everywhere), and it was phenomenal. Hopefully the rain doesn't do too much damage because Gore is skiing fantastically. |
Yup, Gunbarrel was open, along with virtually everything else. Harv, I had the same thought about posting a comparison photo from a year ago. I posted my TR from yesterday and some pics here. Off-the-map glades skied superbly - plenty of coverage and the snow is clean and white, not the usual dirty, pine needles & moss that you usually see this late in the season. Even lower mtn glades were great - we skied Chatterbox on the last run of the day, soft and well-covered.
|
Hmmm... Chatterbox was also my last run of the day.
