Re: Greek Peak Conditions

where's the snow
Skied today, everything is skiing great still! Tons of powder in the woods. Nice bumps on Olympian and Christie's, Iliad has nice looking bumps too but never got to them. The woods were to good to leave. A bit on the chilly side but i love days like today. No crowds no lines tons of snow was still skiing fresh cord at 3pm.

We were in the parking lot, about 100 yards from the lift. My buddy had just left after stopping by to have a beer. We saw the lift stopped and heard some noise - didn't really see what was happening, then heard a loud cheer.

He came back over to tell us what happened - he was a bit shook up. Said a kid (apparently he found out later it was a little boy) had slipped out of the chair and was stopped right at the first tower at the base of the hill - before the lift started to climb the hill. Pretty high. Apparently another kid - maybe a brother I guess - was trying to hold the kid who slipped. Several people gathered under them - the kid hanging down managed to kick his skis off, and then dropped - maybe at the urging of the people below, not sure. The group below - including at least one patroller I think - had locked arms below the kid and were able to break his fall. My buddy thought he was ok - just shaken up - but didn't'  know for sure. Patrol took him away in a sled a short while later.

Good think the kid was littleā€¦that's a long way to fall, and the group below would've been hard pressed to catch a bigger person without getting injured themselves.

Chairs seemed dry to me. Lifties were doing a good job of helping swing the chair. Just a random accident I think.

Wow, Billy.  That's a pretty amazing story. It's hard to believe that the boy survived a fall from that height. It sounds as if people happened to be in the right place at the right time to break his fall.

Thank God for that. What a scary scene that must have been. Had to be a relatively athletic kid to be able to click out of his skis while dangling from a chair.....amazing stuff and great save by all those involved.

Broken record time: Greek skied amazing yesterday.....perfect snow, perfect sun and perfect company

Just an FYI that this Sunday is another $5 Ski Company ski day, so it might be best to ski elsewhere. Why on earth can't they select an off-peak day? What are they doing? Folks that come out for $5 are not interested in purchasing $399 season passes plus tax, tip, and fees.

Know all about it, RJ. I think it's a great idea for them to have it on a Sunday. It's really a good chance for them to showcase the hill as well as the rest of the resort.....who knows, I bet they get more pass sales out of that than we may know about. That said, it doesn't mean I like it as a skier b/c who in their right mind likes crowded trails, right?? But from a business stand point, to me, it makes sense. Besides, the show from Trax is friggin funny as hell to watch.

Song is running a Ski Company promotion on Saturday, which is somewhat interesting. Not sure what my plan will be for this weekend. Ugh! I wish GP would hold the promotion later in the day on Sunday if they insist on holding it on a weekend in order to at least afford us a few sane hours of skiing.

I concur. A 10AM start for the masses would be nice. Later even better, but that prolly doesn't make sense.

I think even a noon start would  be generous! All of the other mountains that participate don't start until 4 or 5 PM...

I skied until 10:30AM yesterday, and things were not too bad. I was originally going to scrap the day, but thought a couple of hours was better than nothing. How did the remainder of the day go? Was it as crowded as the previous $5 day?

On a side note, the Traxx deck is going in this year. They are still looking at bids, but the plans are to install it this year. Also, snowmaking will either be added to Hercules or the lines on Odyssey will be replaced this summer. Snowmaking on Mars and Arcadian gate are a couple of years down the road. No other big projects are on the books--just a continuation of general maintenance.

I skied same hours as you, RJ, with the same thoughts....not bad at all, crowds that is. The skiing was spectacular!

It was hard to tell if there were less people there or if GP was better prepared to handle the masses this go around. It seemed to me they certainly learned a lot from the last $5 day, they had their shit together. Organized lift lines, tunes, tents with food, etc etc. Anyway, skiing was great fun and was a good day to be on the hill. Looking forward to some turns tomorrow.

Can not wait for the deck!! That will be sooooooo much fun

skiing was great Saturday, perfect packed powder on the groomers and bumps in the morning sun with a nice fresh kote of snow after lunch. ungroomed trails had a bit of funky crust that broke up nicely as the day went on. great coverage - snow was clown pole deep in the woods

Camp, at first I thought that the Trax deck might not be the best use of funds, given the amount of work needed on the mountain. I was also concerned about the aesthetics of covering the creek, but I'm starting to warm up to the idea. Trax seems to be doing fairly well off-season, so a deck can only add to entice people to patronize the establishment. What a great place it will be to hang-out--especially if lift-served mountain biking is a go.

I noticed that there is a for-sale sign in front of the Gatherings. I hate to see local businesses go under. What a shame.

On a different topic, there is now a mysterious 4% fee on season passes. Given increases to minimum wage, electricity, and other costs, management opted to implement the fee rather than raise pass prices outright. It makes sense from a marketing standpoint to hold passes below $400, but 4% is one of those nagging little fees that nobody really likes. Sort of like paying $500 for a hotel room and then being charged a $50 resort fee, $30 parking fee, and so on. Just charge me $600 for the darn room.

Trax IS busy during the non-ski season. I feel this deck, as you already pointed out, will draw even more attention to GP during the summer. Toss in sipping cold ones, warm summer breeze, and some epic mountain bike crashes --- what a blast this is gonna be.

Yup, that stinks. Gatherings was a fun place to go. Nice building too, just to big of a place. If it had remained The Rafters it would still be around.

Isn't that the "resort tax", or "luxury tax" that NYS has??? Either way, I agree that it's smart on GP's part to market the passes that way. I'm all for it --- we have a new deck to pay for!!
