No idea how much snow they can make, but might I recommend not taking a 30-day forecast as fact?

Thanks for the recommendation

Here are the Tog prices Note the Greek Peak add on charges |
I just heard that First Tracks is being discontinued for next year. Anyone who purchased First Tracks will receive a refund. Hopefully nobody that paid grumbles too much, or they may be forced to honor the sale.

I bought a Tog pass this year for $340 and Greek Peak was included. I knew this deal was too good to be true! That said, next year's price for the combined pass is still a good deal...if some damn snow would fly around this place.
That said, GP has done a stellar job this year in keeping the place somewhat open. |
GP is currently making snow, but if anyone is heading south for a diversion this weekend, Shawnee, Blue Mtn/, Camelback, and Jack Frost/Big Bolder have 100% of their terrain open.

Any word whether the opening time will remain at 830 or will be moved to 730? I liked getting out there early. |

Maybe you could post southern hill conditions in their on thread ---- pretty sure any Greek Peak skier could care less Whiteface, Stowe, Smuggs and Jay Peak do not have all of their terrain open |

The opening times are remaining at 8:30 on weekends and 9:30 on weekdays (non-holiday). It will take just one customer who already paid for First Tracks to cite NYS Constitutional Law (e.g., may not diminish a contract already in place without the mutual consent of both parties) to throw a monkey wrench in GP's plans to end First Tracks for next season. |

Just thought I'd throw it out there if anyone happened to be in PA over the weekend, or wanted a change of pace. Yeah, I know that Northern ski areas aren't in the greatest of shape either this season (although they have many more miles of trails to cover than the central NY, PA and NJ ski areas). I'm hitting GP this weekend instead of Killington, as I will hopefully have several more weeks to ski Killington, but not so certain about GP. In terms of GP skiers not caring, where did all of the GP skiers migrate to that used to ski GP in the 70's and 80's? Given that skier visits are up in the Pocono's, one could speculate where they went. |
How's Little Iceface skiing today? Any reports?

There was a nice turnout today. All, but chairs 1 and 2 operated. There was a bit of a line on 1A, and at times on 4, but no more than 10 minutes at the most.
They made snow on the Iliad and Karyotis last night, so those trails opened a bit later. Chair 5 was open, but required taking the shuttle bus, so I skipped it. Overall, the skiing was pretty good. Coverage was so-so. I did hit a few rocks, but it is what it is. I took several runs on Hercules, which was in really good shape. Given that l hadn't skied GP in a couple of weeks, I was pleasantly surprised how well the snow held up, given that they never really had much of a base this season. I give it two more weeks. On an asside, Mountain biking will be continued this summer, Peak Fest will be transformed into weekend events during the month of August versus just one large event, and planned summer improvement projects may be delayed depending upon the final financial results of the ski season. |
GREAT NEWS!! Can't wait --- we may not have all the snow we all were looking for this winter, but we never lack for dirt around here in the summer |
That's great! HaHa! They broke even last year on the mountain biking, so they'll give it a shot again this summer. With that said, more people need to venture out, or they may discontinue it down the road. |
I think two things --- #1 the really need to build a flow trail to attract more beginners to intermediate bikers like me. IMO both of the new trails are VERY challenging, I mean, even the current blue trail I white knuckle down portions of it
#2 Get the word out early and be open both Saturday and Sundays. Last year being the first year it wasn't advertised much, understandably so, it was their first year and they were learning what to do. Their feet are wet so it's full on game time! |
I absolutely agree with your points, Camp.
I purchased my mountain biking pass for Killington last year months before GP ever mentioned offering mountain biking. This year, I may forgo the Killington pass in an attempt to patronize GP a bit more. I'm still on the fence, as I really have the Killignton trails figured out. In terms of the trail difficulty, I had no idea where GP built their trails, but was shocked this winter when I noticed the trail that ran by the Odyssey. I've been riding for a number of years, but prefer the more gentler trails. I'm not out to prove anything, and certainly don't need to fall off a 10 foot ramp. Let me coast down the mountain with ease, and smell the roses along the way. They definitely do need to construct some beginner/intermediate trails. Again, I'm not familiar with what they have, so I probably shouldn't even make that comment. In terms of advertising, does GP do any of that? |
I'm looking forward to checking them out this year. I assume a trail bike will work (5" travel 29er) or is a full on DH rig required?
|
I have similar bike to your, Gorgonzola and I survive
I've been told the fastest time up there was done on a hardtail, once again proving it ain't the arrow but the indian. RJ, all I know is their marketing dept has made HUGE improvements as of late with staffing. Given enough money (i have no idea what that amount is) they will get the word out. I'd imagine choosing the right avenue to get the word out is key. |

If you think the trails at GP are difficult, then I wonder how many real DH bike trails you've actually seen. I've ridden many places in NY, and GP is definitely fun, but very easy in comparison. But yes, every good bike perk needs a flow trail. I suggest checking out Plattekill if you want to experience real NY gnar. Actually Whiteface has even more Gnar, but you will be sure to destroy your bike there. If you want flow trails, go to Windham, but come back to Plattekill at the end of the season, because I am hoping to build a flow trail that will kick Whindham in the ass. I'm hoping places open their bike parks early this year due to the likely shortened ski season. I'm already getting in gear.
I'll take boilerplate ice over wet snow any day
