Bwhahahah, that was funny I'll tell you what I know. I know RJ loves to bust our new owners balls, why I don;t know. In fact he openly states he doesn't like them. Strange for a guy who's invested in property there, no?? I know that neither Mark or John take a paycheck out of the place, so while an assumption on my part, yes, I feel this is a way for them to generate more revenue to be invested back into the hill all while being able to claim no increase in pricing. IMO good marketing move. I wish they would bring family pricing back in line (at least closer) with other surrounding hills as to bring back fimilies like yours. In fact, one of our crew no longer skis with us because of that pricing. Would I do things differently if I bought the place?? Yes. But I didn't so I choose to support them instead of bash them. I appreciate everything they've done for MY little ski hill in CNY. I hope they make millions cause I want to ski there until the day I die. |

And you don't know what we are talking about?? Until the recent ownership change no one single penny had been spent on the hill side of the road. I understand why, I get it, but that doesn't make it right in my book. These guys have spent money on the hill side bringing it back to the best around in CNY. I agree with RJ that if they were happy with simply being the best in CNY they could stop now. They tout premier NYS ski area, well right now that's a stretch imo given the current facilities and snowkmaking. I have no doubt that we'll get there over the next few years.

I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement. I just don't think it's incredibly urgent. I think the new owners are doing it right. One step at a time. They don't want to go into too much debt too quickly. I do think they need to make more snow, but I think a more aggressive approach would do the job. I've seen them blow full capacity once and it's impressive. They can do three runs simultaneously. But most of the time, they just Fart around in the Snowmaking department. If they just used the Damn equipment they would be way further ahead. But that still costs $$$ especially on a bad season.
I come from a mountain where we have even more primitive snowmaking, and we made more snow than Greek Peak this year. We even ran 3000 feet of hose to reach a trail that normally didn't have Snowmaking. That could have been done on upper Mars, but it didnt happen, because There's very little love for the game in their management.

I agree with everything you said. You must remember when we would blow Olympian and Zues then, right??? That's some damn good terrain for CNY. IMO those 2 trails should be a priority and not a last minute well we have time lets make some snow over there. I know cause I was one of them that dragged the effin hose thru the woods to get them there. It can be done. |

I do too Camp, but it must not be driving enough folks away to make a difference. Fact is, we've been enjoying Song and Lab but unfortunately haven't got to ski either fully open yet and probably won't. We had planned to hit GP a few times as well - spend some of the money we saved going to Song/Lab - but unless we all get blessed with a storm or two we probably won't ski Greek at all this year. Without a family discount we intend to go back to Song/Lab next year - and after that our oldest starts college so who know what we'll do then. As far as snowmaking I've always thought GP seems to hold back some of their resources when they should just be blowing away full bore. |

Yes, I remember when they made snow on Zeus, and that was my favorite trail. Don't need to drag hoses for that trail. The hydrants are right there. Beats me why the don't use them. I don't specifically remember blowing snow on Olympian, because back in those days, we always had natural snow, so everything blended in. I've seen that there is one hydrant at the top of Olympian. Put two,or threes guns on that and you had a good start.

I too am perplexed why they don't place more emphasis on Zeus. They get so excited to open Hercules, but Zeus has snowmaking, and is lighted for night skiing. In terms of the Olympian, they have hydrants at the top of the trail. Back in the day, they would line guns up on the head wall and blow a freakin glacier.
Back to the topic, what other ski area/resort charges a variable rate resort fee? I've been all over the northeast and west, and don't recall ever coming across one. 6% on top of the 8% county/state tax is excessive. We used to eat nearly all of our dinners at the Acorn and lunches at Trax, but will no longer be doing so just for the principle of it. In terms of the deck, given it was paid for by a grant, I guess why not. I'm sure it was hopping on Sunday as a result of the unseasonable weather. If this were a more normal ski season, I doubt people would be sitting outside on it this time of the year. I'm sure the revenue they generated on the deck will help offset the snowmaking they will need to crank up later this week. |

Camp, do you have any leverage in encouraging the Peak to make snow on Zeus, and Olympian in future seasons? That would get me And many others there more often.

I know and that surprises me. Obviously if there was a big swing in the bottom line they would adjust pricing. Probably won't now for sure. This ranks as one, if not they worst winter for snow I can ever remember. I seriously don't think we've had 2 feet of natural snow all year. It's amazing we've been able to ski at all. |

Think about it from ski area's ownership and management, especially small, family/privately owned mountains. I hope they're all still open next year... :(. |

Reopen on what? NOAA is calling for an inch and a half of rain followed by an inch of snow...Greek does report that snowmaking will resume Thursday night though. |

I imagine this season will be daunting to smaller areas bottom line and may well affect early season tix sales next season . My hope is that they all are able to take this hit and operate , i for one once my damn hip is finally healed will make certain to buy next yr.
These feeder areas are the backbone of the industry and provide entry level . Experienced and aging skiers a wonderful option for a great day's fun and entertainment . Their retro friendly vibe keeps it real .
Life ain't a dress rehearsal: Spread enthusiasm , avoid negative nuts.

It's a fucking thunder and lightning storm, in CNY right now. Buildings getting demolished down in Florida by tornadoes today. My whole house is shaking from the thunder, and the rain and wind is slamming into the walls with more intensity than I'm acustomed to in August. It's 53 degrees in Oneonta. This storm is demolishing buildings and I have no reason not to believe that it will demolish the snow. I have no reason to expect there will be skiable snow by Friday.
