Maybe consider Royal as an alternative - particularly if you like deep snow and trees
Don't ski the trees, ski the spaces between the trees.

Re: Magic Mountain Conditions

Kleetus
Was planning on going to Gore today after how good it skied yesterday, until I realized Magic was opening today for one day only before opening for the season with all natural and minimal grooming. After seeing how well Gore skied yesterday on about the same amount of seasonal snow to-date and the knowledge Magic keeps the trails pretty trimmed. I had a hunch it would be good.

Turns out it was better than good. It was amazing. So much snow and coverage was phenomenal. Pretty much everything but the steepest woods were in play (Wardrobe, Hallows, Magician, etc). Picks of the day were broomstick to black line, talisman, socerer, and goniff, but everything skied awesome. The very light crowd also helped, and allowed for many powder turns even up until my legs flamed at 2.

Were there a few rocks, waterbars, ditches, and exposed stumpz/thick brush, sure. Could you easily avoid them, absolutely. I went pretty hard and didn't pick my way down for the most part, and have 0 damage to report.

I may or may not have been on the first official chair up today for the season with non-magic employees. I didn't plan it really, just got in line around 8:50 with my soon to be ski partner for the rest of the day. I feel honored, and huge props to all the volunteers and Magic staff for getting the mountain ready and opening early to take advantage of all the snow. It certainly did not go to waste.

In short, after Gore yesterday and Magic today, best opening weekend of skiing or November skiing for that matter in my book.

Looks awesome. Is it as uncrowded as the pics make it seem?

Looks like some nice stream action over there.

Can only imagine today was off the charts. It has made sitting here today working that much more difficult.

Water bars were the biggest hazard on the day.  We all have our tough days at work......today I was the lucky one.

F’in NOVEMBER!

It’s been 30 years since I’ve skied Magic.  MC is right, there’s summin’ wrong with me!

I guess I should report in the conditions thread....

Definitely improved from the weekend!

Thin cover, yes.  While you can make it thru the woods without catching a snow snake or ripping out an edge, it boney.  More route finding than skiing.  Still untracked to be had on trails at lunchtime.  Good start to the recovery!

Jerk Chicken at the Black Line is a little dry, but the Fondue is fine.

Afternoon didn’t disappoint.  Had to get a little more creative, but skied untracked all afternoon.  Did a Glebe Mountain circumnavigation (ski/skin from Magic Summit to Timber Ridge, skin/ski back) late.  About a two hour round trip, but it was good to get some skinning in!

Band inside the Black Line Tavern made for an interesting light show outside the Black Line Tavern.

Solo.  In one of my clips that was just some rando speeding ahead to steal first tracks.  Magic ain’t a place meant for race mode, if you ask me!

The Green Chair is new, is the White Tiger glade from the top of the chair new as well?  Only knock would be that it’s relatively short.  However, it’s steep, straight down the fall line, through well spaced mature pines.  That’s going to be fun with good coverage!

Do have to buy the card for $149 in order to get the $29 Thursday ticket?
