Was planning on going to Gore today after how good it skied yesterday, until I realized Magic was opening today for one day only before opening for the season with all natural and minimal grooming. After seeing how well Gore skied yesterday on about the same amount of seasonal snow to-date and the knowledge Magic keeps the trails pretty trimmed. I had a hunch it would be good.
Turns out it was better than good. It was amazing. So much snow and coverage was phenomenal. Pretty much everything but the steepest woods were in play (Wardrobe, Hallows, Magician, etc). Picks of the day were broomstick to black line, talisman, socerer, and goniff, but everything skied awesome. The very light crowd also helped, and allowed for many powder turns even up until my legs flamed at 2.
Were there a few rocks, waterbars, ditches, and exposed stumpz/thick brush, sure. Could you easily avoid them, absolutely. I went pretty hard and didn't pick my way down for the most part, and have 0 damage to report.
I may or may not have been on the first official chair up today for the season with non-magic employees. I didn't plan it really, just got in line around 8:50 with my soon to be ski partner for the rest of the day. I feel honored, and huge props to all the volunteers and Magic staff for getting the mountain ready and opening early to take advantage of all the snow. It certainly did not go to waste.
In short, after Gore yesterday and Magic today, best opening weekend of skiing or November skiing for that matter in my book.
