Wait what? You don't ski with fur strips?

Nice to know that I was right and that the Belleayre gondola is not drawing people away from Plattekill despite Laszlo's criticism of it.  I wonder if he will do some lift investment soon to handle the extra crowds.
This seems a bit premature. I don't think one day proves anything.

I actually asked the parking guy, he said it was the second longest line of cars down the road that he remembers.

Lines where short by normal resorts standards, maybe 5 mins at the triple, zero at the double.

My wife talked to someone who went to Belleayre first, but the rental line was so long that they gave up and came to Plattekill. I also overheard someone saying they they had driven to the Hunter parking lot, saw the lift lines, and decided to ski Plattekill instead.

So, I'm not sure today's crowds at Plattekill are evidence that the Belleayre gondola doesn't draw people. If anything, it might draw too many on a holiday weekend. Even saw a bunch of cars parked in the parking lot by the start of the access road off 28 on my way home. Don't recall having seen that before.

Thought Face skied well, by the way, with all the man-made snow. Looks like Laszlo's hoping to have at least one trail open through next weekend.

Good

The gondola brings more people to the area.  Exactly what it was intended on doing.  And when people can see Plattekill from Belleayre they might be more interested in checking it out.  The idea that putting a gondola at Belleayre was going to put Plattekill out of business is what I have always argued against.

There will be more than one trail.  NF and Plunge are deeper than they look.

Exactly. and when Plattekill puts in a HSQ down valley, they will do even better. The line to the cafeteria yesterday was all the way across the lodge. I bet it was worse today. They need that new lodge.

Sno, are you sure the old ADK express isn't laying around somewhere? If anyone can bring that lift back to life it's Macker. that thing was badass!

The original Adirondack Express is at Barton's mine, just a short heli ride from the dark side.

They have all 28 towers in the garnet mines.  The terminals have all been scrapped and were torched apart when removed.  The chair frames were also scrapped as well as all the grips.  They sold off the chair seats.

There's a reason that lift was replaced as it was becoming very unreliable and it cost so much for parts that keeping it alive was more trouble than it was wort.

If the state couldn't afford to keep it running that they spent over 6 mil on a replacement then there's no way Plattekill can.  There are secondhand high speed quads that will come on the market as 6 packs replace them and are much easier to get parts for than the AE1.

I was going to bring my daughter and a friend to Belle for the day, but the friend would have to rent and I knew that was a deal breaker.  I was pretty sure by the time we got in the hill it would be noon at best.

Took a different way home today that wasn't exactly direct, but I wanted to mix things up, and I saw this. I've been on this road before in summer, but never noticed the details.

We got at least 2 feet. Probably more. By the end of the day the drifts were insane.

Lifts ran all day. The double was out of the wind except at the very bottom.

God the skiing was good.  This day will live on.

Staying with Marcski tonight, power is out everywhere, except Plattekill.

Somebody here posted about Belle, Windham and Hunter and I saw it on my phone. I was inside the lodge and I stood up on the table and said:

"Welcome to only open ski areas in the Cats!" I got a big cheer."

Definitely some people came from Windham, their minivans were getting stuck everywhere.

Looks like almost all photos are out of focus.

See you there tomorrow for my first Platty experience. With the snow continuing to fall tonight should be some more fresh tomorrow.

Looking forward to hitting Belle on my Ski3 pass Sunday for the first time as well.

Great day. Until I took a ski edge to the face in a freak fall:

Wonder if these stitches will stay in if I try to ski tomorrow?
