Last year I follwed turin, ny nws forecast as well as the burlington nws high elevation forecasts as well as jay peak's own reports(they can easily make 8 inches into 10....that would mean a 20% increase over a season) and I can honestly say Turin ny kicked NVT's ass big time. I didn't mark it down for totals. I should do it this year.
And snow ridge isn't even in the bullseye of the tug hill. They're on the edge. I remember a bunch of lake effect storms absolutely hammering just northeast of turin. But snow ridge got a ton as well. I was watching the bands on the radar. Incredibly intense stuff. It was feet and feet on a weekly basis. Nothing even remotely close to that in NVT. Sure NVT got more snow than southern new england. You can just watch a radar and see there's no jay peak cloud. Radar will show microclimate events like a thunderstorm cell. So of course it shows that. Simply orographic lift/upslope across the spine of the greens. Remember that storm that dumped 2 feet on killington and NVT? It was mixing at okemo points south. Remember all the hype on the weather channel? That should tell you something that they make that much hype over something that is routine on tug hill and happens all the time in the rockies/wasatch range. And that storm had way too much wind with it as well blowing a lot of the pow off a lot of the trails.

Now you're the main character in the WORST JOHN GRISHAM book ever trying to expose the truth about how Western NY provides the best skiing in the east and how there's a cover-up to send everyone to Vermont.
Where's that 2k vert hill you keep talking about that gets dumped on again? |
In reply to this post by PowderAssassin
haven't been to Jay since the 90s but have been to Keystone since with no snow. Squaw with no snow. Mammoth with no snow. Lots of other areas with a lot of snow too, but the answer to who has the best skiing is always "it depends". |
In reply to this post by ml242
Well it depends on how you define "best". I'm more concerned with snow quality. That's my number one thing. I also like wide trails. Snow ridge has 500 feet vertical. NVT are around 1500-2500 with killington at around 3000. Then look at number of trails as well. Obviously snow ridge is a tiny hill. But then also look at the price. 18 bucks for a weekday lift ticket vs outrageous prices charged in VT to ski mostly ice. One thing that also sucks about the ec is how narrow majority of trails are at a place like killington/jay peak. That's TRUE acreage because on narrow trails pow gets tracked out much quicker. Magic really needs wider trails. Less ski-able area on narrow trails. Snow ridge has wider trails that are more like the west. At a place like aspen you have huge wide bowls. It's really fantastic and so much better than the constant narrow trails on the east. New england trails are narrow because they rely on fake snow because they barely get enough snow to maintain a snowpack and spend an absolute fortune on snowmaking. Wider trails costs more to fill with snow. Okemo has some wider trails because they realize intermediates like them better. But they don't leave pow on their trails so it's irrelevant.

Sure. You can visit alta and can miss the powder. That's what happens when you book a trip ahead of time. Then you could take a trip to the berkshires and have a powder day. It doesn't mean the berkshires get more snow than alta. LOL Try living there. Keep trying to make logic out of nvt getting more snow than telluride and park city utah.

The mere fact that you keep bringing up Park City Utah (of all places) shows what a fucking idiot you are. Who fucking skis Park City? Some years it gets more than 300" of snow - some years much less (like last year). But every year the terrain sucks donkey balls and they groom the shit out of it so they can keep marketing to talent-less posers like you.
Park City Sucks I'd definitely head to Stowe or Jay over Park City. That's not even close. Nobody here has said that the skiing on the EC is better than out west; that's just a dumb strawman you keep constructing so you can tear it down and ride off in the glow of imaginary "victory". |
Actually, they said jay peak gets 355 inches of snow a year and that would put it above all those places listed. I questioned that. LOL....You sound a little butt hurt. So telluride and aspen is for posers too? I listed like 10 resorts. Could list a few more as well.

Yes...that's how we arrive at an average Einstein. Thanks for the lesson! You seem very concerned with being a "poser" and "talented". You pay to ski like everyone else here. You don't have any Olympic medals. Get over yourself. I ski for fun!

Affirmative I guess I'm not "core" enough so that means NVT gets more snow than aspen/telluride ect.!! I like coming back in one piece and not having part of my body becoming a Christmas ornament on a tree.

When I was in Utah we stayed in Park City which is a very cool town I thought...we had a good time at the bars anyway. Since we were there we skied Park City a day. All the negatives everyone has said are true so no need to rehash them again. However, we made it over to Jupiter Bowl and that was a blast. There was a ton of snow and I guess we just hit it right. Anyway I'd like to ski that day over again many times.

How do I up my core level? Do I ski jay peak and run into trees? Can you take me with you for a lesson to become more "core" so that I will understand how jay peak gets more snow the high rockies?

I don't think anyone said Jay gets more than the rockies. It's just that Jay gets the biggest average in the east. Do you really think we are all just running into trees? Maybe you just aren't a very good technical skier. Of course trails get tracked out fast. Why do you think we ride the woods? I can ride powder all day in the woods. And as for powder days, I easily rode 20+ powder days last year, no question all in the east.
