Re: Gore Conditions

I saw on the trail report the Gondola and AE II had the "Hold" symbol up. Wonder what happened.

Hope you get out of there soon. If it was a power outage I would think they would have fired up the generators by now.

We just heard that the Gondola has a mechanical problem that may or may not be able to fix. It’s been two hours now and counting and no sign of evacuation

We have been stuck on the Gondola for over an hour and one half. Nobody at Gore seems to know what is going on.
The website says the AE2 is "on hold for maintenance", and the gondola is "closed for maintenance". Maybe it's time for rope evac?

I was gonna go up there with Bob D today, but I bailed out at the last minute.  Sorry I missed you...er... maybe not.

A power outage wouldn't effect the diesel backups. I'm guessing some kind of mechanical problem like a de-railed the cable or busted a drive system.

Looks like I dodged a bullet by sleeping late today.

Front desk says AEII is running. Not sure I believe them. Guess I’ll check the webcam . . .

I don't get it.  Kton has web cams, MRG has them....most babies have them in their nurseries....every street corner in NYC, Boston, Chicago and 30% of every intersection in the entire USA.....but good ole Gore.....its too hard to figure that out...(and yes I understand the construction thing...but the Tannery Pub opened the day after Thanksgiving....

In the mean time, if you're hedging on going to the mountain to ski for a day, what's the first thing you look at to tempt your appetite?

The WEB CAM!!

The Gore "Alpine Conditions" page on my iPad shows Gondola and AEII down and The Rumor not open.

The same page on my PC shows both lifts running and The Rumor open.
I have no words (other than a few you can probably surmise)

Gondi was back in action (although some people were stuck on it for 2 hours - at least the mountain gave them a free cocoa, some evacuated) around noon. ADK Express was running about an hour before that. Almost the entire mountain was buried in fog. Snow was decent in certain areas.

Re: Gore Conditions

Ended up being a solid day today. Started out firm on the lower mountain before I bailed and went up top which was much better.

Chatemac and Hawkeye were pretty firm but edgeable. Lies was good styrafoam with the whales. Picks were Topridge which softened in the sun and Double Barrel (both barrels) to bumps under Straighbrook which had decent snow. Top of Rumor was great first run, very quickly got scraped after that since it looked like literally everyone skiing the summit decided to ski it at once. Bottom of Rumor was kind of a mess with random holes/ice chunks.

Have to question 2 things today:

1. Why did high peaks not run? They spun it and looked like they were opening it then nothing. Given how well Double Barrell skied Darkside, Darby, Hulabaloo, and Lower Steilhang probably could have opened and would have skied just as nice.

2. What was up with the grooming? Seemed like they groomed WAY too early last night when the snow was soft and before it set up. This resulted on slick frozen cord which really didn't soften much. Ungroomed trails skied much better IMO than groomed because of this. Begs the question if it would have been better to just not groom at all or groom later. Not saying they did the wrong thing as they can't control the temp and forecast was admittedly tricky but just a thought.

Glad I made it out today. Now on to 3 days in Colorado next week on my way back from meetings for work in the Bay area. Fingers crossed the forecast trends better for the east coast next weekend because as of now it does not look good.

Today was the kind of day which scares me. Very firm, barely edgeable with lots of people skiing too fast for conditions. Again, glad topridge was left ungroomed as soft snow on moguls was quite skiable. The off piste trails skied best today. I wondered the same about high peaks. They could have run a groomer over it to bust up the variable crud and opened it up, but wondered if chair was the reason it was closed. The Gondi stopped again early in morning for about 10 plus min. There seems to be a lot of lift stoppages so far this year.

North Quad lift operator told me ‘they had a problem this morning’ with high peaks chair.

We were bummed not to ski the dark side but thought the summit was great today - enjoyed lapping Hawkeye and  Chatiemac.  After the last couple of years we all have to pinch ourselves that this is mid-December.

I'm surprised to hear that Double Barrel and Straightbrook glades were open.  Did they get some recent snowfall this past week?
