Re: Gore Conditions

Kleetus
After my 6 hour shoveling and snow blowing adventure between last night and this AM. Was on Gondola at noon. Skied Uncas which was meh. Snow was OK, but the brush everywhere detracted. Though skiable, not sure why it didn't appear to get mowed. That was the low-point of the afternoon thankfully.

Lapped Hawkeye, Chati, Straightbrook glades and the liftline from mid-Hawkeye (whatever it's called these days). Great snow, especially the liftline and Straightbrook glade. Even some great zipper bumps skiers left.

Moved over to High Peaks and alternated between the Darby's (upper was open), Hulabaloo, Lower Steilhang, and the Dark Side Glades. All had great snow and coverage, especially the Dark Side glades.

Returned back to Straightbook for a lap on Double Barrell and a couple more Hawkeye to liftline bump runs before ending the day with a run on Showcase and Wild Air. Both were semi-skied off at this point but still way better than usual for this time of year.

Season is off to a great start. Hope there are no major meltdowns so we can keep this base going after tomorrows immature snow event.

Gore must be having problems with getting water out of the Hudson, they are asking people to bring bottled water (Dasani) on Wed for a discount lift ticket.

(Thats a joke for anyone who can't figure it out).

Not today. A few movable guns on Uncas, but no tower guns anywhere.  Sad.

Tragic loss of valuable snow making conditions to build on the natural base.  Lost opportunity.  It’s a shame.

I heard there was a fire in the pump house?  Is that confirmed?

This post was updated on .
Here is what I got:

Eventually~ Gore will have 9 total pumps which will increase pumping capacity to a maximum of 6800 gallons per minute. Last year Gore had 6 total pumps with maximum capacity of 4800 gallons per minute.

At this moment 2 of the pumps are down so you are looking at 7 pumps now vs 6 last year.

I am told no fire in the pumphouse.

Top Ridge opens tomorrow, guns are on Hawkeye.

I lapped that today, was great, the whales were Styrofoam in the AM and softened a little as the sun hit it and then stiffened up later in the day. Talked to a few people and they are still having a few computer glitches but so far they are making as much as they possibly can. Xmas week should be excellent for the spores.

Re: Gore Conditions

Gore was to be expected today considering last weeks rain and no snow after. They did a good job grooming the lower mountain and first hour snow held up well. After that started to get skied off.

Moved up to the upper moumtain after that and lapped Hawkeye and Topridge the remainder of the day as those were the pics. Hawkeye had edgeable manmade and nice bumps formed on the bottom half. Topridge was styrafoamy but still edgeable and fun. Chatemac was not so much so.

They made a ton of snow this week and really buried the upper mountain. As I left guns were starting to fire on Lies. Gore sent out a marketing e-mail after I left stating such and that they are also going to be lighting up Rumor. I think there is a good chance we may be skiing both by next weekend. It seems like the snowmaking improvements are in fact leading to improvements in snowmaking output.

Boy, did I have a great time skiing today. I give gore credit for leaving the upper mountain ungroomed. It made for exciting skiing. Chati had the largest snow wales I've ever seen a gore. The upper mountain was as empty as midweek. I've been having fun since opening day. I hope the good times last. The new snow making upgrades are very evident.

What I was told today is that the earlier "glitch" with snowmaking was due to a leak in the pipe from the Hudson and that they got that fixed pretty quickly. It does seem that there are more guns firing than normal, so that's a good sign.

Stellar early December conditions today. Chatimac and Hawkeye we're both excellent. Soft bumps with zero ice in the troughs. Just a few easily avoidable spots of ice and bare spots on the steeper drops in the afternoon.

Topridge was a joy to ski after noon. A continuous line of sun bathed whales down the middle of the trail from top to bottom. They had that unnatural, but fun, feeling of skiing on styrofoam. A styrofoam roller coaster, weeeee
