Sig, when we saw you at the entrance to Boreas, it was post pulling some extreme G's on Sagamore. When Gunny says I was rippin, what I was rippin was my lumbar!....so when we saw you I was feeling every bit of my age and the thought of plunging into Boreas on my Mono was ....well let's say a bit intimidating.

@MikePom. I saw you as well - people on the lift were impressed with that "older dude" ripping the mono ski
I chatted with a few people in those glades, if anyone remembers a guy with orange pants red helmet and biege jacket that was me What's up with the high peaks chair? |
word I got from a patroller Sunday was that High Peaks has major mechanical issue. He didn't know exactly what it was, but said the lift was done for the season. They've also missed the order window for a replacement lift, even though they have the money do it. Lift manufacturers already have all the orders they can take to support 2019-2020 season installed.
I told him I recalled a few years ago I thought they had another major mechanical problem and had to beg/plead/grovel/get lucky for the replacement part. Don't shoot the messenger.....just relaying what he said. If true, it'll make a for a tough year next season! |

It's a drivetrain issue.
I think it's likely done for the season and maybe forever.

On my last run from the top (Harv I thought you were doing that one too) I saw a few sleds and some maintenance guys up in the tower on 6. I thought maybe they are trying to get it back up before the end of the season. I also spoke with a few folks from Ski Patrol and Maintenance and it seems unlikely but to see people working on it gave me a little hope. Thought the summit skied best yesterday Double Barrel the one nearest to Rumor was amazing, straightbrook glades and I even skied Hippie for the first time in a few years. And all on March 24! We got a text to say the Gondi went down so I stayed up top longer than I wanted...I definitely felt my age by the time I got back to Burnt Ridge and thank you to ski patrol for keeping Abenaki and Barkeater open late so I could get back to the yurt without too much Pipeline. Great skiing with you Harv...see I can be social

Great skiing with you too Suds.
In fairness to Bone, he said they would try to get it going. He also said it was a serious issue and I assumed that they wouldn't invest "serious" money in it, when the replacement has been approved.

High Peaks chair is getting replaced? Was there an announcement that I missed?
|
I heard today that it will be fixed and should be spinning before the end of the season. But this info did not come directly from lift operations.

Skied Gore for free today thanks to the season pass reciprocal program with McCauley
The good: up top anywhere until around 2:30pm when it started to turn soft. I lapped Hawkeye, Chattie, and Open Pit and heard from others that Lies was most excellent. Foxlair, Sleeping Bear and Tahawus also skied really well. The bad: lower 1/3 of the mountain after lunch. I know it's warm and spring conditions but Arena was a skating rink at the top and slush to the base. Quicksilver was a real drag too but I didn't hit that until 3pm so that was to be expected. Someone said they opened TopRidge after 2pm but that it was "gloppy" (their term, not mine). I heard from a ski patrol guy that High Peaks chair is down due a fried motherboard. He also thought it was in the budget to replace the chair for the 2020-2021 ski season. Glad I could get there before this weekends rain. Overall, a really fun day up there with some sun, warm weather and plenty of good runs. |
If you showed up early and gave up on the non groomed terrain then you lost. Early on everything groomed was skiing very well but what wasn't loosened fillings. I skied Lies early and it sucked but got better later. My picks of the day were the woods off Burnt Ridge. Abenaki and Barkeater were skiing wonderful. My buddy made me do the powerline, eh...Barkeater propper was much better. The best run of the day was a closed run that, the group of tweens or younger that were in there said "why the hell is that trail closed". Plenty of snow up top but the bottom is rotting out quick. No rain until around 2:30 but very light and the sun was out.

Today was a tale of two halves.
Before 12:30 - Socked in. Temp near 35 degrees. Lots of trails closed (including showcase and twister). Mostly soft snow but patches of ice and puddles here and there. Really not fun. After 12:30 - Sun came out. Soft snow abounded everywhere. Temp bypassing 50. The Rumor glacier delivering a nice corn harvest as I and all there to ski had hoped. Overall rate today as OK. Morning Sucked, afternoon was great. As a whole averages out to OK. Coverage was good, but lots of puddles in the snow pack. Also potential good news. High peaks was spinning around 1. Never opened but it ran for what looks like an hour. Looks like the fix may be in. |
today, while going past 6, they were working on it. It would be huge it they got that back online before year end, there is a lot of snow over there

That's pretty much exactly what happened at plattekill too, in the morning was tough going sticky and then in the afternoon the sun came out and it was beautiful.

Sounds like there's going to be some testing tomorrow and if all goes well the high peaks chair will be back online Monday.

Good to hear. The Dark Side is in great shape.
"This is pure snow! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?"

That's ORDA's April Fools joke. High Peaks didn't run today.
It was firm and fast today, with some bare spots and lots of hard ice patches on all the low angle trails. No bumps. No Rumor. Lies was the pick of the day after it softened up just enough. mm
