Good luck to all in the storm and be safe.
Thanks GSM.  You too - we are in a tough spot right now.

Had some real wind this morning but it seems to have died down.

Not sure if I may be a little oversensitive on this issue. The storm seem to be viewed as a marketing opportunity by some vs a potential disaster.  I guess I expect that from Accuweather, but it seems more widespread than that.

Going to clean the leaves out of the gutters.

Harv, that map is in knots, so add 16% to those numbers..

Pat, is really worth driving, god knows how many hours, in unreal high winds and heavy rain to ski  maybe a foot of slop.

+ 100 to that.

The much-discussed cold front (let's call it Dr. Evil) is now rushing over my part of the Hinterlands on its way to meet Sandy. Temperature has dropped about 10 degrees since yesterday evening and it is not going up. Local crews even salted the main highways this morning.

It's not only about the skiing, it's about the adventure.

Jason, you have to look at my route to get there. I would be arriving from mainly the other side.

If you are high and dry, don't have to evacuate and still have power and Internet, read this for the full synopsis on Sandy:

"A power outage computer model run by Johns Hopkins University predicts that 10 million people will lose power from the storm."

Wow.

Considering where it passing, not surprising.

How many people lost power in the great ice storm of 1998?

900,000 households in Quebec
100,000 in Ontario
500,000 in the NE US

1.5 household = at least 3-4 millions people.

Yeah. Hard to imagine a more populated landfall area for a storm.  I think the numbers in 1998 storm are higher because wind and ice probably bring down more powerlines than wind alone.

This looks pretty scary - I think the yellow is wind advisory. Much of the area also has a flood advisory too:

Calling for some heinous surf on Ontario and Erie as well.

Hard to believe NYC isn't evacuating lower Manhattan, or at least talking about it. How much storm surge are we looking at?

May the force be with you MadPat. And all who may chase the storm. And of course the rest of us who hope our houses aren't blown or washed away.

the calm before the storm up here in the DAK's - there has not been even a puff of wind in 3 hours.  Totally dead still winds and fog.  Kinda spooky.

NYC/MTA trains, subway, and buses closing down around 7pm tonight. Also included is the PATH system connection NJ to NYC. NJ transit also beginning to shut down trains and buses. My wife's office is closed for 2 days and no school tomorrow.

As of this post there is no rain and very slight winds here in North Jersey.

Great website SBR, thank you.  Anticipate evacuating tomorrow morning for 24-36 hours.

Still hasn't started to rain, which is odd as the radar has had us in the green for hours.

Seems too humid for virga.

Best to you GSM.

Some awesome (in the true sense of the term, as in creating awe) images and time-lapse sequences of Sandy:

So far Sandy has wiffed on the Dak's.  Not even any wind here. Zero rain.

Schools are doing early release so the kids will have a nice day to play outside

Crazy deer man:

Looks like landfall will be central NJ sometime late this afternoon.

Looks like the snow zone has moved south:
