Re: Whiteface Conditions

WF reporting 2" in 24hr

CoachZ said he had 5" at his house which I'm assuming isn't that far away, multiple ppl saying it was dumping all day, and webcam monitoring showing the same.  Looks like there was more than 2" sitting on the railing at mid on the cam as of yesterday afternoon....

Not that it really matters what the website says, but it just seems like the numbers on there are off constantly.  I wonder if the overall 195" for the season is legit or hi/low.

Guess I'll find out tomorrow when I'm up there, regardless it should be sweet.

Well, they certainly don't round down, and they do include the snow that fell in October (2nd year in a row).  I would say it's fairly accurate.....probably more accurate than last year's total.  I don't think we had 60" or whatever they claimed.

They are reporting 2 inches in the past 24 hours.  I am in charge of plowing around the neighborhood and can tell you we had probably 5 yesterday and 3 after 6 last night.  It has been snowing pretty steady in LP all week and it is still snowing now.  It really doesn't matter any more.  We are chuck full of snow and you can pretty much ski anywhere you want.

Unfortunately, Lake Placid itself usually receives more snow than Whiteface mountain when u exclude pure elevations events.  NW flow upslope snow favors the town of LP more so than Whiteface so the differences your talking about are actually expected.  Its too bad WF is located in Wilmington and not LP.

Any intel on the bump situation at WF?

I see some trails are ungroomed, but are they ungroomed leftovers from the snows this week? Or ungroomed with legitimate moguls? Tough to get a read on that from the conditions report.

Looks like it's officially the holiday weekend:

Awesome conditions today once you found where the wind put the snow

Cloudsplitter glades, cloudspin, left side of most trails, upper Mac all sweet

Dude, you gotta get that beacon/shovel/probe ASAP!  Slides are listed as open on the conditions report.  That might change my thinking for tomorrow......

Soo......it's been a great weekend of "spring" skiing, no doubt.  How are things holding up the the heat?

Doesn't look like the Slides have been open all weekend??  With the rain crust from a week and a half ago lurking I guess legit wet slab concerns shut it down after Friday?

They were open Saturday.  I was told (by someone who skied them) that by 11:00 or so they weren't very good.  Snow was sticky and heavy Saturday.  It started early.

Some rocks peeking through at the top of Vic.  Good coverage elsewhere.  Cloudspin especially had great coverage.  Sunday was heavier snow, but not slush.  Almost 12,000 people at the hill over the weekend.

Glad to hear things held up reasonably well through the weekend.  Hope the shadier woods are holding up even better than the trails.  Now we just have to get through this week, with colder air coming in Saturday night.  Should be another great "spring" skiing day Saturday, but Sunday will probably be shi....ah, firm.  I do have one forecast showing 4-6" coming in with the cool down Saturday night into Sunday, which would help.  Anyone else seeing anything like that?

I know the cycles haven't corned things up yet, but whomever told you the Slides on Saturday were 'not good' after 11:00 needs to have his or her skiing "man card" revoked!  I've been in there on everything from mid-winter blower to the falls busting loose at the end of April and I've never had a bad day in there!  Saturday was one of those days I almost wished my son didn't want to ski, as I would have hoofed it up there.

Personally when they open the slides to the masses I take one run and head elsewhere.  It becomes of mad house especially when you get so many varying ability levels from ripper to gaper.  There always is some fat dude that insists to post hole Slide in because he is too out of shape to side step it.  In short it becomes a shit show and at that point I'd rather ski Cloud or Hoyts or in the woods.  Those lines are too narrow to ski when its crowded and I'm tired of having to help people find there f-ing way in there because I am a nice guy.

Perhaps, but just like any skiing anywhere, if the conditions are good in there you can find places that the gapers aren't capable of going, and still have a lot of fun.  I've been in there on plenty of Gold days and the traverse can suck, but the Slides themselves are never so crowded that I can't have a good run.  Just being out there is special, IMHO.  To each his own!

You certainly do seem like a really nice guy. Maybe you should use the opportunity to separate some NJ gaper or Masshole from his money by convincing them they need a lesson from Z the great.

Re: Whiteface Conditions

So, the weather may not be as big of a dumpster fire as feared earlier in the week.  Nice spring skiing tomorrow, possibly a bit cloudy and then wet later afternoon.  Hopefully a little better than dust on crust after the transition Saturday night.  Windy, probably.

Anyone else skiing WF this weekend?  Thinking of heading up, bringing the skins in case the lifts are limited.....
