With Gores closing, the inevitable wandering starts. It's that time of the year when desperation sets in, this morning, I got all worked up when out of nowhere it just started puking snow, what a rush for April 30th. This time of year, those who can't live without skiing begin to wander further and further from home in search of snow, and strange plans on how to execute freaky long distance run away's like Jay Peak begin to take shape.
Saturday we ventured up to Whiteface, our primer for reaching deeper and deeper into the remnants of the season.
Skiing was fantastic! We expected rain, but what we received was the summit rising into a mix of sun and clouds rolling over the high peaks to make a perfect ski day. There was a lot of really great cover and unlike spring days of the past (as with Gore last week) we skied at will on steeps, narrows and broad cruisers, harvesting the spring corn crop. I was really pumped up reading the reports coming from the mountain yesterday and today. If we didn't have to close out our camp yesterday we would have been on mountain.
They are only going to run Facelift and Little Whiteface. Doesn't make a lot of sense because the Skyward had better coverage than anything on Little Whiteface. Mountain Run area is toast although Wilderness may be poachable by walking. Other than that, just Excelsior and it's variations. Not really exciting except for the fact that it's May. I really thought it would be possible to shovel Skyward. You need pitch for good spring skiing and they won't have anything steep open, so I doubt many people will show up.
Excelsior, Summit Express, and Upper Valley are a given. Probably Lower Valley and Fox. That’s 5 of 9. Did Boreen survive? Maybe Danny’s Bridge to Brookside if the park stayed viable? Maybe Essex or Northway?
Question is....is the lack of Summit Quad a $$ issue or a coverage issue? I’ve got no problem skinning up and booting it down the head wall if I gotta!
I’d have to convince the wife that we should miss our friend’s Sac-o-de-Mayo party (as in cul-de-sac) on Saturday. Any par-tay named that has gotta suck balls, so hopefully I make it up on Saturday. Heck, even if I gotta do the day trip....lift served in May just may be worth it!
I know I don’t post much, but my thought based on last week is MAYBE Upper Northway (knock on wood) could hold up through the week, being a north-facing slope. I poached Cloudsplitter and it had an unbelievable amount of snow. It’s a stretch, but maybe. I think Victoria has a good shot. Pretty well covered outside of the upper skiers left. If Lower Skyward is still covered Saturday and the Blazers runout is still skiable, a poach to L. Skyward could be decent.
