Camp - it's different to let Fields get bumped up that way, but is it a bad thing? The natural snow areas on Fields and Iliad are still pretty thin in general so not much opportunity for bumps - maybe they're just letting Fields get bumped up in the snowmaking area to provide a little diversity.

No, certainly not a bad thing. I'm curious as to why the decision was made to do it on the only intermediate trail off the Quad. IMO we don't get enough natural snowfall (anymore) to have enjoyable bump runs. Most of the time they will be icebergs that are no fun to ski. I'd sooner see right under the Quad left to bump up. It's already marked "expert" and God knows how those bump skiers like to show off any_A_ways
As for Fields and Illiad, we're only using half of those trails anyway because of no snowmaking on the sides. To me that just doesn't make any sense, why limit the already limited trail count early and late season?? Blow the piss out of those 2 entire trails so there is a base. Turn the guns back on the sides of the trails we want to bump up, then let the skiers ski them in. BOOM. Base = better bumps come spring corn season. The way those 2 trails are maintained now (like they always were) we'll lose half of the trail come spring corn season. Again, just my .02 |
I agree they could be blowing snow to fill up the rest of Fields and Iliad. As for Fields being the only intermediate run off the quad....well...it's the only one marked as an intermediate. It's not the only one that SHOULD be marked as an intermediate. |
Up until a few years ago Illiad was intermediate |

It looks to me like they are doing that on Iliad right now. |
What I was referring to in terms of safety concerns are the number of missing/damaged snowmaking snow fences, out or missing lights and leaning light poles, lack of snow/ice removal from the chairs, little consistency in lift-ops, down or leaning trees, and so on. There is one tall dead tree leaning on another on Alcemene. If it breaks loose, it will likely land on 1A. Do I even dare mention making snow and grooming right up to the front windows of the A-frame so that skiers can crash through them. In fact, there was a bad injury on lower Mars hill on Saturday due to among other things, an unmarked hole filled with golf balls in the middle of the trail. Even upper Mars lacked snow, and I saw an individual in front of me hit the unmarked drainage ditch and wipe out. I'm afraid to say that there just isn't any on-mountain supervision.
As far as the Fields are concerned, they need to groom the darn thing. Let the natural snow side of the trail bump up just like they've done for the last 55 years. The intermediate skiers need a trail to ski off of 1A. There are plenty of glade trail for those who prefer natural conditions. |

These issues have been around for years and years at Greek Peak. Makes me wonder why these issues have been around for so long, what's the common denominator here?? I concur Edit to add: I can't feel sorry for someone who skis into a building, a BIG building at that. |

that's interesting about the fields, without bumps it's may be one of my least favorite trails (maybe anywhere) with the funky fall line and being so short into a highway interchange with skiers coming from every direction. big gs turns over the usual roller at the intersection can be fun if its not crowded I guess but unless theres bumps or something cooking at the race shack we only use it as a connector to get somewhere else. trail marking be damned, iliad is a much better intermediate route down

That's funny...far skiers left is one of my favorite lines on the mountain...different strokes |
Camp, I was trying to be kind about the A-Frame accident, and I hope the individual was not badly injured, but the thought of skiing into the building was downright humorous. I'm visualizing a family sitting at one of the tables in the A-frame enjoying there lunch when a skier lands on their table.

Chair 4 was spinning today and they were filling the pond when I left. It looked like the pumps are ready to go and guns were set all the way up Hercules...
Pumps ready to fire up! A Frame missing window |
Greek skied ok tonite, I like the fields bumped up. It would be nice if ole Wess would get it right, web site too. Chair 4 never turned and Iliad was not open but Wes's and web site said they are open. Kinda frosts my balls and I am sure many others. They were fairly busy early on,and 1a was stoping often. Chairs half full and lines were a cluster f~~k , I am starting to worry about Greek, and find myself skiing other hills more and more.
|
The discrepancy between what the phone and website says about which chairs are / will be running vs reality sucks. There's no reason for it. I'm heading up there this afternoon - Wes says Chair 5 will be spinning, but who the F really knows...it's a crapshoot. Nobody seems to care, cause it's always been like that. Yep, loading the quad is a clusterf--k as you say. Even when it's not busy there. Neither of those should be hard to fix. I guess they need to paint the A-frame bright orange. |
I am thinking we should start a new tread. (What's really open at Greek ) It just kind of sucks when you drive 45 min and find out once again, that Wess is a fargen lier , The website forget it. As Forest would say skiing Greek is like a box of chocolates.
