First tracks, or more honestly I was second, after patrol on Jack Rabbit ...

...this shot was after that second run on Top Notch:

Hickory Ski Center first tracks
Eric on Top Notch

More later after skiing (my switchbacks are being mounted now) then dinner and maybe more skiing.

Re: Hickory Conditions

Based on end of the day conditions yesterday and the anticipated thrashing the hill should get today, you will find ginormous bumps on The Hare, Jackrabbit and Topnotch. Expect prominent rocky terrain features on the backside of each bump and try to stay out of the troughs. Winfall had not been skied quite as much yesterday, mainly because the rock bands near the top and the bottom headwall are still fairly treacherous. Lots of rocks to still be discovered/uncovered on the lower pitch. Reports are that the trees are not really quite in (I stayed out of them yesterday). Saw a group coming in from skiing The Disconnect and every one of them were checking their bases before coming into the lodge.

On the other hand, it is Hickory. It's rugged, there are lots of big rocks, it's steep. We go there *because* it's like that, not in spite of it.

Conditions de joure.  Keep doing what you're doing, you get what you got.  Think you're an expert?  Ski Hickory, find out.

All the best is waiting for you, in the fall-line.

Any reports on how much snow Hickory got from Wednesday's storm? Not that it matters to me so much since I'm going tomorrow anyway but I've been getting questions from others who are still on the fence (silly fencesitters!).

Re: Hickory Conditions

GetAmped
I was somewhat surprised when I pulled in at 10am on Saturday (3/22/14) and there were *no* other vehicles parked in the lower lot. Up at the lodge a handful of vehicles were clustered around the garage. But poma 1 was spinning and poma 2 opened shortly afterwards. Report from the slopes was a couple inches of dense snow on top of a 3-4" layer of (sometimes) breakable, edgeable styrofoam on top of a deep base of packed powder. Softer up top than down below.

Flurries teased for most of the morning into early afternoon as temperatures rose enough to softened the snow pack. By 1pm everything had been skied enough and softened enough to make for truly great spring conditions but not to the point of turning to corn. The sun came out around 2pm and the chunder under untracked lines was yielding easily.

There is a ton of snow up there right now. Today it will probably be set up firm, but the next warm weekend will make for some spectacular spring bumps. Winfall was really well covered and the bumps in between the two headwalls are just about perfectly formed and spaced.

I've been busy with the FIRST Finger Lakes Robotics Competition at RIT, but I did see a post that Hickory is planning to stay open until at least April 6 and have lowered their ticket to $30. I may have to get back up there tomorrow depending on the weather.
